Abyssinians, also affectionately known as Abys, are intelligent and usually quite playful throughout their lifetime.  They love to be around the family and participate in what you're doing.

The distinguishing features of the Abyssinian are the large ears, almond shaped eyes, and the ticked coat (alternating bands of colour).  Ruddy is the most common colour.  There is also Red (Sorrel, Cinnamon), as well as Blue and Fawn, which are the dilute colours of the Ruddy and Red respectively.  Other colours including Silver are being developed in Europe.

To learn more about this fascinating, charming breed, check out some websites on the Related Links page, particularly the association websites and The Abyssinian Homepage.

Abyssinians are one of the oldest breeds of cat originating from around the Indian Ocean.  The first "known" Abyssinian was brought to Great Britain from Abyssinia (now Ethiopia) during the Abyssinian War in 1868.   The Abyssinian breed most resembles the Ancient Egyptian portrayal of cats in their paintings and sculptures.
